Word Munchers Deluxe — eat the right words, dodge the Troggles Runs here

1996 · MECC · Mac OS 8 · SheepShaver (Power Macintosh 9500) · 640×480 at 8-bit colour

Guide updated October 2026

Yes: Word Munchers Deluxe runs free in your browser on this page. Press Start and it boots Mac OS 8 on an emulated Power Macintosh 9500, with no download, no plugin and no account. Controls: Arrow keys (move the Muncher), Space (munch the word you are standing on). Your progress is saved in your own browser between visits. It plays best with a keyboard; on a phone, on-screen keys appear once it starts.

▶ Start Word Munchers Deluxe

A grid of words, a green Muncher, and a line at the top of the screen telling you what to eat: red things, words that begin with a b sound, the missing word in Goldilocks ate lunch with a ____. Eat the right ones, avoid the wrong ones, and keep away from the Troggles wandering the board.

Word Munchers Deluxe is MECC's 1996 CD-ROM remake of its own 1985 school-lab classic, the reading-side sibling of Number Munchers. This is the original Macintosh CD, running on an emulated Power Macintosh under Mac OS 8.6.

Mac OS 8.6 starts and opens Word Munchers Deluxe by itself, in about a minute. Click Play with Troggles (or Troggle Free), pick a grade and a topic in the book, click OK, and munch.

MECC was sold to SoftKey in 1995 and its catalogue eventually reached Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Word Munchers Deluxe has not been sold for more than twenty years, and no current product contains it. Full reasoning is in notices/word-munchers-deluxe.md, and the takedown promise applies without argument.

The game asked for a 68040 or a Power Macintosh in 1996, so it runs here on the same emulated Power Mac and shared Mac OS 8.6 system as Oregon Trail II and Hot Dog Stand. The application sits on its own small disk; its pictures and the commentators' voices come off the emulated CD as you play, as they did in a school lab.

How to play

Choose Play with Troggles for the full game or Troggle Free for a calmer one where only a wrong answer costs you a Muncher. The book that opens next sets the content: pick a grade from 1 to 5 down the right-hand edge, then a topic (Classification for grades 1 and 2, then Grammar, Phonics, Vocabulary, Sentences and Challenge), tick the skills you want, and click OK.

On the board, move with the arrow keys and press Space to eat the word you are standing on, or click a square to walk there and click it again to eat. The rule for the round is printed at the top. A Troggle that reaches you eats your Muncher; hold X to jump over one, step into a safe zone, or eat the cookie Cookie drops to be invincible for a while. Clear three boards and the Muncher and the Troggles act out a fairy tale.

Word Munchers, Number Munchers and this version

MECC made Number Munchers and Word Munchers in 1985, for the Apple II machines that filled American classrooms. Both were remade in colour in the 1990s, and Word Munchers Deluxe is the CD-ROM remake, with spoken words, animated cut-scenes and grades 1 to 5 of reading skills instead of the original's vowel sounds.

No working Macintosh copy of Number Munchers appears to survive in public archives, which is why this site's maths Munchers game is Super Munchers. This is the reading half.

Questions people ask

Is this the real Word Munchers?

It is Word Munchers Deluxe, MECC's 1996 CD-ROM version, running from the original Macintosh CD on an emulated Power Macintosh.

How do I eat a word?

Move onto it with the arrow keys and press Space, or click its square to walk there and click it again.

How do I get past a Troggle?

Hold X to jump over it, move to a safe zone, or eat the cookie for a short spell of invincibility. In Troggle Free mode there are none.

Which grades does it cover?

Grades 1 to 5. Classification is grades 1 and 2 only; grammar, phonics, vocabulary, sentences and the challenge mix run through grade 5.

Is Number Munchers here too?

Not as a game: no Macintosh copy of Number Munchers is known to survive in working order. Super Munchers, MECC's maths-and-trivia sibling, is playable here instead.
