Amazon Trail II — MECC's 1996 sequel Runs here

1996 · MECC · Mac OS 8 · SheepShaver (Power Macintosh 9500) · 800×600 at 8-bit colour

Guide updated October 2026

Yes: Amazon Trail II runs free in your browser on this page. Press Start and it boots Mac OS 8 on an emulated Power Macintosh 9500, with no download, no plugin and no account. Controls: Cmd-Q (quit to the Finder). Your progress is saved in your own browser between visits.

The middle Amazon Trail. MECC rebuilt the river journey for CD-ROM in 1996 with video, photographs and a new quest, and kept what made the first one work: a long trip by canoe, food from the river, trade with the people you meet, and a goal at the end of it.

This is MECC's Macintosh CD, version 1.0, running here on an emulated Power Macintosh under Mac OS 8.6. The Amazon Trail and Amazon Trail 3rd Edition are here too.

Mac OS 8.6 starts and opens Amazon Trail II by itself. After the opening film, click New Quest and choose a difficulty; if a button does not respond, click it again.

MECC's educational catalogue passed from MECC to SoftKey, The Learning Company, Mattel and eventually Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Amazon Trail II has not been sold in any form for well over twenty years, and no current product contains it. Full reasoning is in notices/amazon-trail-ii.md, and the takedown promise applies without argument.

The first start is the slow one: Mac OS 8.6 downloads once, then the game, which is mostly video. Later visits start much faster.

Starting a quest

The game opens with a short film and then its title screen, with three buttons along the bottom: New Quest, Load Quest and High Score. New Quest asks for a difficulty: Newcomer, Challenger or Expert. Newcomer is the place to start.

The quest itself begins in a museum, and the journey is by river, from people to people, with food to catch and goods to trade along the way.

Which Amazon Trail is which

The Amazon Trail is MECC's first, a canoe trip up the river from Belém to bring cinchona to the Inca King. Amazon Trail II (1996) is this one. Amazon Trail 3rd Edition: Rainforest Adventures came from The Learning Company and sends you back in time to Vilcabamba; it was also given away free by General Mills, which is why many people remember it from home rather than school.

Questions people ask

Is this the Amazon Trail II I played at school?

If your school had Macs with CD-ROM drives in the late 1990s, very probably. This is MECC's Amazon Trail II for Macintosh, version 1.0.

A button on the title screen did not respond.

Click it again. The title screen sometimes takes the second click, particularly while its film is still loading.

Can I save and come back?

Yes. Your quest is saved inside the emulated Mac, which is kept in your own browser between visits; Load Quest picks it up.

Does it work on a phone?

It loads and it is all mouse, but the first start downloads a large system. A computer is much more comfortable.

Put Amazon Trail II on your own site

Free, no permission needed and no account. Paste this where you want the machine to appear; it brings its own emulator and asks nothing of your page.
